Capsule Packing with a BURU Insider
Hi all! My name is Brandace Wilson and I am the COO of BURU…nice to virtually meet you! You may have seen my face pop up in pictures from time to time, but I much prefer the behind the scenes work here and I am excited to share with you some of my favorite travel pieces from the Buru line up just in time for Labor Day travel.
I’ve officially been part of the Buru team for one year now, but I’ve been dressing in these silhouettes for far longer than that (for easy math, let’s call it a decade). And, over time, I have chosen (more than) a few favorites that make their way into my closet in different colors and patterns again and again. And, when they make their way into my closet, they eventually make their way into my suitcase.
We recently returned from a family trip to Europe (I’ll spare you the sob story about the cancelled concert we were supposed to be attending…we were definitely Down Bad when we got that news) which came on the heels of 6 weeks of other summer travel. So, by the time we were planning for departure, I was DONE with shuffling suitcases and challenged myself to pack a capsule wardrobe – something I have never been good at, but something I was determined to get right this time. Now, as I reflect fondly on actually being able to accomplish that feat, there were 3 pieces that jumped out as wardrobe stars, and I wanted to share them with you just in case you have Labor Day plans and aren’t sure where to start.
So, without further ado, here are my top three Buru signature silhouette travel essentials:
1. Mel Mixed Button Down
This top is a no brainer for packing as it literally goes with just about anything. I actually made room in my suitcase for two different colorways on this trip (oatmeal and tangerine) and paired them with white jeans for dinner, with the matching Everyday Shorts for a Surrey bike tour and with the matching Smocked Waist Midi Skirt for a museum visit. If oatmeal and tangerine aren’t your style, check out the crisp white, textured ivory bows or classic red and white stripe as alternatives.
2. Everyday Pant
Perhaps the GOAT of pants, especially when things get stressful as you’re traversing the French Alps and half of your party is car sick in an overpacked rental car (ask me how I know). These pants go from comfortable car sitting to bicycle riding to castle touring in a flash. Bonus, you can sleep in them…versatility at it’s travel best! I also chose to bring these in two colorways – black and white stripe and limoncello – and I am so glad I did. This is a silhouette that will always be in the Buru line up, so if these colors aren’t your favorite check out our classic dark chambray, pop-of-color chartreuse or elegant garnet for a different look.
3. Smocked Waist Midi Skirt
I would love to say that vacation doesn’t make my clothes feel tighter, but I would also love to not lie to you so…enter the Smocked Waist Midi Skirt. If you haven’t tried on this skirt, I urge you to do so, I promise you will not be sorry! The smocking on the waist is so comfortable (and forgiving!) and it is so easy to dress up should you need to. On this trip I didn’t need to, opting instead to make it a sight-seeing look and also a swim cover up (sidenote – if you also have a 7-year-old and need indoor pool recs anywhere from Geneva, Switzerland to Vienna, Austria, I’m your girl!). But, just trust me when I say, dressed up or down, she’s a true champ in your wardrobe. And this oatmeal stripe will go with anything you decide to throw into your suitcase.
Honorable mentions
I would be remiss if I didn’t add two honorable mentions to this list. Luggage that arrived two days after we did created an even more “capsule” wardrobe than I was planning for, and these BURU x Val Wide Leg Trousers in Navy Cheetah saved me. From the airplane, to sightseeing in two different cities (and two different days), to make-shift pajamas and even a swim cover-up, they really earned their keep and deserve a spot on the list.
And finally, while working with one of your dearest friends is pretty much a dream on a day-to-day basis, when said friend (Hi Morgan!) overpromised and underdelivered on the delivery date of what is truly the perfect travel dress, you start to question things. Kidding. But this new track dress would have absolutely made the “Top 3” cut if I could have gotten my hands on it. I wasn’t able to pack it, but you can – just pick your favorite color and go!
Here's hoping this is helpful if you have Labor Day travel plans – and there’s still plenty of time to receive these pieces for your trip if you do. But, if you are staying closer to home, these pieces are pretty much my go-to everyday as well, no trip needed!
